Emma Miller walked into 216 Coworking in downtown Cartersville for a milestone neither she nor host Logan Lewis had really planned on: the first in-person episode Your Morning Drive had ever recorded. Miller, a Holly Springs bartender by day and a romance novelist by everything else, spent the next two-plus hours proving exactly why she was worth the leap. What started as a loose, expletive-laced hangout turned into a genuine look at how a Wattpad fan fiction writer with a Harry Styles obsession built a career, and a devoted readership, out of 15 million reads, a book called Cherry, and an entire personal brand stitched together with cherries.
From a Basement in Woodstock to 15 Million Reads
Miller's writing life restarted, almost by accident, in a friend's basement in 2018. She and her best friend, also named Emma, got nostalgic for the fan fiction they used to read and stumbled back onto Wattpad, where Miller still had embarrassing stories posted under her real name from 2012. She deleted the old stuff, then got pulled right back in, eventually writing Harry Styles fan fiction while her friend wrote Harry Potter. "Both the Harrys, both Brits," she joked. Then COVID hit. Her friend Heather talked her into posting a new story, and what Miller expected to be a few throwaway chapters exploded overnight: 4,000 reads in a day, a million reads before she'd even finished writing it. That book, Cherry, eventually hit 15 million reads. "It is the reason, and I truly mean this, that I am anywhere today," she said.
Cherry Gets a Second Life
Cherry didn't stay a fan fiction footnote. Miller is now working with a literary agent to traditionally publish a reworked version of the book, stripped of any direct Harry Styles references since it still has to stand as original fiction. The agent connection came full circle: she'd first read Cherry in college, years before she was in the business, then found Miller again after Miller posted about rewriting it. "She read it when she was in college to become an agent," Miller said, "and then later on I posted about it... and she found me and was like, hey, I want to be a part of this." Miller had already self-published two full series on her own, handling her own marketing, editing hires and cover art, but Cherry is her shot at the traditional route: bookstore shelves, wider distribution, and the machinery of an actual publisher behind her.
A Brand Built on Cherries and Tattoos
The cherry motif is everywhere in Miller's world: her necklace, her earrings, her phone case, and hidden on every book cover her illustrator Cassandra designs. It traces back to the fandom that made her, and so do the tattoos. Miller has nine Harry Styles and One Direction tattoos, including a Liam Payne tribute and a bunny with glasses that carries its own story. At a Love on Tour show in Atlanta, Harry Styles reached into the crowd and asked to borrow her glasses mid-show; she threw them to him, he wore them, and the next night at the same seat, he remembered her and asked for them again. "I have videos, don't worry," she told Logan, who immediately requested a copy for his wife.
Bartending Stories and Boomer Takes
Before any of the books, there's the bar. Miller works front-of-house in Holly Springs and didn't hold back on service industry horror stories, including a regular who wrote her an unsolicited poem and a man who told her he wanted to sex traffic her, prompting her to quit on the spot when management brushed it off. She and Logan spent a long stretch debating tipping culture, sparked by a viral $9 tip on a $620 bill, and Miller broke down exactly why a flat 20 percent doesn't account for table time or a $2.13-an-hour wage. She also leaned hard into her running bit about being "ageist," recounting a 90-year-old customer who criticized her for yawning at work, and how she shut him down by claiming her mother was dead. "On the inside I was like, let's fucking go," she said.
From Fan Fiction to Hockey Romance
Miller made a case for fan fiction as a legitimate training ground for writers, pointing out that Fifty Shades of Grey started as Twilight fan fiction and the Netflix movie After began as a Harry Styles story. Her own catalog has since moved into traditionally structured sports romance with her Playing the Part series: The Center of Attention (released February 10), The Summer Goal (out the day after this episode aired, August 11), and The Penalty of Falling (coming February 2). Each book comes with its own curated chapter-by-chapter playlist, a habit she carried over from her Wattpad days. She also went on a full rant about being called a "puck bunny" in her Atlanta Gladiators fan comments, despite being, by her own account, one of the team's most devoted supporters. Fans can meet her in person at a Gladiators game signing on October 17.
